Bluffton, Indiana

Established in 1838 and located in Wells County, Indiana, the City of Bluffton got its name from river bluffs close to the town's original site. During the time, most roads were still made of dirt, but this city earned the nickname of "The Parlor City" by having some of the first clean paved streets in the region during the Trenton Oil Boom. Back then, a home's parlor was typically the cleanest room in the house because it was the first thing guests saw upon entering your home. Today, Parlor City Plaza is the first thing visitors see upon entering the town's downtown district, next to which is right next to the historic courthouse.

Bluffton has a long history and many historic homes scattered throughout its downtown district, especially north of Main Street. At one time, the city was known as a piano-manufacturing powerhouse behind the H. C. Bay Company. It was also the home of renowned iris breeders and hybridizers Mary and E.B. Williamson. In 1903, the town was included in the corporate name of the Cincinnati, Bluffton, and Chicago Railroad, but unfortunately, the Bluffton bridge section of the railroad collapsed and went out of business a decade later. The city is home to three properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Villa North Historic District, the Wells County Courthouse, and the Stewart-Studebaker House.

Bluffton is a city that cares for its residents, as evidenced by some of the amenities that are made available. The local Life Community Church offers free, fresh produce to families in need on Tuesdays in their parking lot, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the city sponsors free "Toddler Time" at the gymnasium. This fun group get-together provides an opportunity for young children to enjoy activities, games, story-time, and socialization with other kids in their age group. Ouabache State Park is a gorgeous park bordered on one end by the river with a swimming beach, great fishing, and plenty of space for boating. The name is pronounced "Wabash" and is short for "waapaahšiki siipiiwi, the native Miami word for the Wabash River.

Right up the road is the Palmetto Oaks Sculpture Garden. This attraction is only a mile away from Bluffton's Historic District and is filled with amazing sculptures created by local artist Stephen Kishel. He uses welding and other techniques to join and shape scrap metal into incredible art pieces that are displayed in exhibits.
