Columbia City, Indiana

Founded in 1839, only a year after Whitley County was formed, Columbia City, Indiana, is a community of fewer than 10,000 people and serves as the county seat. It was incorporated as a city in 1888, and while it is unclear who the first official settler in the region was, it’s commonly believed to be a man named Asa Shoemaker. He settled at Big Spring Creek, which is located where the Columbia Township of today lies. The city remained very small until the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railways were completed in 1856, These, along with other roadways being built, spurred the rapid growth of settlers and businesses alike. In fact, from 1860 to 1875, the population of the town tripled, and since then has continued to grow, up until now. The present-day population, in the past 15 years, has increased by about 1,800 people, which translates to a whopping 20%.

Columbia City has maintained a stable economy over the years and remains a great place for people to look for employment. Over time the city has been known for producing many different things, such as plastics and parts for automobiles. It was even the largest producer of blue jeans in the world, out of the Blue Bell factory. Besides local manufacturing jobs, many residents were originally attracted to the area because of its proximity to Fort Wayne. 

The short distance from Fort Wayne provides plenty of other opportunities for employment and a boost in local commerce. Even being so close to such a large city, Columbia City has managed to maintain a small-town feel with plenty of local eateries that are sure to please your palate. If you’re feeling brave, there’s an attraction here that is almost sure to scare your pants off. The 3rd Whitley County Jailhouse, reportedly haunted since the late 1800s, may be one of the creepiest buildings in the entire state. The building is believed to be haunted by one entity for sure and possibly several others. The main ghostly resident is thought to be Charles Butler, who in the 1800s killed his wife. She had tried to run off with their son while he was in jail. After being arrested for the murder, he escaped from the jailhouse but was eventually caught by the humiliated sheriff and hung in front of 200 ticket-holding audience members. The hanging was botched, causing the execution to be longer than it should have been. Butler ultimately died, but his spirit is said to haunt the structure out of anger for what had happened to him. 

For a less ghostly experience, there is Paige’s Crossing. The whole family can enjoy a day of batting cages, go-karts, and rides like the Twister and Runaway Train Coaster. To tone down the adrenaline rush and take a piece of the town’s history, stroll through the Vintage Antique Marketplace. Over 55 vendors offer their products inside the 100 year old church.
